On behalf of the staff at Madison Elementary School, I would like to welcome students and families to the 2018-19 school year.  I am very excited about the educational opportunities that we have to offer our students. As Madison Elementary School strives to educate the whole child, we will continue to focus on social-emotional learning as well as academic programs while striving to provide students with 21st century technological skills needed to be competitive in their future endeavors.

Last school year, we began work on our RULER initiative, a social-emotional learning program presented in conjunction with Yale University and Oakland Schools.   The RULER program seeks to increase students’ emotional intelligence, teaching them ways of: Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing, and Regulating emotions.  This school year we will implement the feeling words curriculum into the program that will assist students in expressing their emotions, allowing them to self-regulate using the “meta-moment” technique, and providing students with a “blueprint” to resolve conflicts effectively.  During the school year, we will provide multiple learning opportunities for families as well to connect our learning to home.

At Madison Elementary staff works diligently to ensure all students performing at grade level are given opportunities to excel even further.  We are also committed to closing the achievement gap for all students. By providing staff with meaningful professional development and collaborative meetings to promote implementation of best instructional practices, our students continue to outperform students in similar schools.  Our dedicated, highly-qualified instructional staff meets regularly to analyze real-time data that helps us to provide small group and individualized instruction in areas of need. Teaching Essential Literacy Skills and Effective Mathematical Practices remain school improvement goals of the building.  Students apply their reading and math skills with real-world connections to social studies and science.

Last school year, Madison Elementary went 1-to-1 with each student assigned an iPad to be used for academic instruction in class.  This year, every student will also receive an online account to Lexia (an online reading tutorial program) and I Know It (an online mathematics program).  These programs will be used in school, but can also be accessed any time where a device and internet connection is available. We encourage our families to utilize these programs outside of school as often as possible.

At Madison Elementary, we strive to create an environment that is welcoming and supportive.  This school year promises to bring opportunities for learning, growing, to build positive relationships, and to provide a solid academic foundation for all of our students.  I couldn’t be happier to be part of our Madison family and share in these opportunities with you and your child.

Sincerely,

Sarah Provenzola-West
